Small Business Spotlight: EspabilaTé, Zaragoza’s Best Tea Shop
So it might just be my opinion, but I’m pretty sure I’ve found the best tea shop in Zaragoza. EspabilaTé is a clever name. The translation is basically “wake up, get yourself together!” And a play on “Té” which is the word “tea.”
Located in the bustling city center on Calle Cortés de Aragón (one of the main streets that leads into and out of the historic district), EspabilaTé has been around since 2013. It’s gained quite a following despite its relatively new status. It was created and is owned by tea aficionado Javier. He lives and breathes tea – his passion for tea even has him giving workshops in his free time. You can see him in action on the local news: check out this interview!
At EspabilaTé, in addition to the huge variety of tea leaves, you can find pretty much anything related to tea: cups, teapots, tins for storing the tea leaves, and other accessories. You can buy coffee from a wide range of countries that he’ll grind for you in the moment. He’s even got spices and spice blends like garam masala.
If you stop by, make sure you aren’t in a rush. You’ll want to take your time to enjoy a chat with Javier, as he expertly helps you pick out a tea if you aren’t sure what you want. If you already know what you want, he’ll chat with you about anything else. If he notices you seem to be from somewhere else, he’ll ask you about it. I discovered that he and his wife are pretty big fans of the US and have traveled there!
Javier takes his time with each customer, regardless of the other customers waiting or the lines forming out the door. Shopping at this quaint local business gives you the feeling of being part of the neighborhood, and that’s part of what keeps people coming back.
If you aren’t in Zaragoza but are a tea fan, you can order products online. Javi is very active on Instagram and posts some great updates and tips! And if you are in Zaragoza… what are you waiting for?
